Photo Challenge {Furry Faces}

It's furry faces week over at I Heart Faces and I just adore our furry family members! The photo I chose to enter this week is of our divine dog, Finn.

I adore this photo, taken on my iPhone, using the Hipstamatic App. He loves to put his head out of the car window as I drive along. When I looked over and saw this - the Eagles song, Hotel California just entered my brain - you know - sing along with me...

"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air..."

(Whatever colitas are!)
I love that he has his eyes closed - looks as if he is savouring the moment don't you think? Or my driving has scared him witless!

Before any of you ask what breed he is - well he is a Samoyed/Golden Retriever. Not only is he beautiful to look at, he has such a beautiful personality. We all love him so much.

Head on over to I Heart Faces to see more Furry Faces!

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge {Let them be little}

On my photography journey, I don't really shoot little kids. I mean I would love to but I prefer bigger ones, ones that I can talk to and gee, they might even listen to me once in a while. When I saw this weeks theme, I just thought that I would sit it out. However, in a fit of nostalgia, I did a reminiscing 'sweep' of my hard drives. What a time consumer that was - it was a lovely trip to tell you the truth.

I found this image. She was born on the cusp of the digital age and this is probably one of the oldest digital images I have of her! It was taken on Father's Day 2002 - 9 years ago now.

The little girl in this image is my daughter, Bronte. She is now 13 years old and just started Secondary school this year. In this image, she was still in preschool. It has bought back so many sweet thoughts. Of times flown by. Thoughts filled with joy and also tinged with sadness.

I do hope she has had a nice life so far.

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge {A Touch of Sun}

We are just coming out of winter here in Melbourne, Australia so I thought I would enter in a more Wintery 'Touch of Sun' image. I love to shoot sunflare, in fact, I had tonnes to choose from (well at least a dozen!) and I decided on this. He is my 15 year old son and he had climbed up on top of a huge concrete pipe and lay down in the sun declaring that it was 'really warm up here and why don't you come on up?'  errrrrr - no thanks! But I did say stay there and let me take your photo!!

Head on over to the wonder I heart Faces and check out the many sunny images! Don't forget to leave comments - everyone loves a comment!

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge {White}

So, this weeks challenge is white. No black and white photos accepted, photo must clearly show a human face and have white in the image.

Hmmmm - perfect! My just turned 17 year old son decided that he had to have his first shave after months and months of us nagging.

In our small bathroom 4 of us crowded - my husband (chief shaver), said son (shavee), daughter/sister (curious looker-on-er-rer) and me (life recorder).

Such a momentous occasion can not be left to go undocumented so in I squished with the camera and snap! snap! snap! I got loads of images. The image below is the first one I took. I adore the look on his face and I love that I got his dad (chief shaver) in the background looking ready to go!

Head on over to i Heart faces and check out loads of other 'white' images..... please leave comments on participants blogs - it is very exciting to come back and read that others liked (or didnt) your submission!

I Heart FacesPhoto Challenge {Pet Week}

Meet Finn aka Finnie aka Finnbar aka Handsome aka Hanny Some! He is our Golden Retriever x Samoyed dog that we have had since he was 9 months old. He is now 16 months old and we love him dearly.

I have plenty of photos of him - so many divinely gorgeous ones, lots of funny ones - some of him swimming, jumping you name it - I have it but, even though there did not have to be a human face this week, I just couldn't resist posting this image below.

Here he is with my daughter Bronte. They both have a lovely bond. She loves to carry him around and he loves it too! He is nearly 30 kilos in weight and he hops up onto her back (or front) willingly and easily. She piggy backs him around the house and whilst on her back he loves a good munch on her ponytail! It is such a sight to see - this big polar-bear-like dog being carried around (and enjoying it) like that. I love these two kids!

I Heart Faces {Props}

This week over at I Heart Faces it is Prop Week.

For this week’s photo challenge we’d like to see how you incorporate a prop into your portrait photo. It can be a simple prop addition or it can be a photo that was taken in a completely stylized session…either way is absolutely fine with us.

I did this stylised shoot with my daughter not too long ago in our back yard. The shoot was Prop Heaven!

I found the fab 70's Beach Umbrella on Roadside Junk along with the red biscuit tin with handles. I strung hearts on our nectarine tree branches, used 3D movie glasses as nerd glasses and the Piano Accordion that we picked up at a market for $2.

I love the way the whole shoot turned out. I love the colours and the 'retro-ness'. She had fun too! It was painless for her - over in 10 minutes - I have to move fast as far as my kids are concerned with photographing them now. Sad.

The lens I used for this was my Lensbaby 3G (or the Control Freak).

Please head on over and check out the many fab Prop images from all over the world over at I Heart Faces!

I Heart Faces {A Touch of Whimsy}

This weeks challenge over at I heart Faces is 'a touch of whimsy'.

Whimsy? I know the word, I even use it, but I thought to myself, what does it actually mean?

whim·sy/ˈ(h)wimzē/Noun
1. Playfully quaint or fanciful behaviour or humour.

and how can I show it with my image?

Well, hopefully the image below will answer that question. It is of my very good friend Joyce otherwise known as Joycey.

I took this photo of her at her 80th Birthday party and love the sparkle in her eyes, the cheeky smile and of course, the tiara - a bit of fanciful behaviour AND humour from her. As. Usual.

 Head on over to I heart Faces and check out some of the most amazing whimsical images!

I Heart Faces {Bright & Vivid}

Bright and Vivid is the theme this week over at I Heart Faces. I used to shoot a lot of bright images, not so much now that it is Winter here in Melbourne, Australia so I looked through my hard drive. Here is one of my favourite images - it is of my son out the front of a Beach Box right near where we live - this one is on a little bay called Half Moon Bay.

Fortuitously, there was this matching, broken wave ski right next to the box. Cool eh?

Pop on over to I Heart Faces for many more Bright & Vivid images (which are making me feel all wistful for summer!)

Thanks for stopping by!

I Heart Faces {From a Distance}

I Heart Faces time! And this week, we don't actually have to show a face! As long as the image has a person in it that's all that counts and the theme is 'from a distance'

I chose this image that I took with my Lensbaby 3G because I just adore the composition. The boy, sitting on the top of the hill, waiting for .... who knows?

Check out all of the many 'From a distance' images over at i Heart faces. Don't forget to leave comments on as many as possible - we all love it!

I Heart Faces {Best Face Photo from May - People’s Choice Contest}

I took this just two days ago, an impromptu shoot in our back garden.

It involved one surprisingly willing almost teenager; one 70's retro beach umbrella found on roadside junk and one pair of 3D movie glasses with the lenses popped out.

I used my gorgeous Lensbaby 3G on my Canon 50D - I adore how retro she looks - very Nana Mouskouri! It is even better if you click on the image and see it larger!

Please head on over to I Heart Faces and check out all of the gorgeous faces of May!

PS: Don't forget to leave comments where ever you go - I try to and it is so lovely to see that your images have been viewed.

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge {Pets}

Pets! One of my very favourite things in the world! We have three pets in this home. Two cats, one named Jasper and the other named Mikki and our new dog (we got him on Valentines Day!) called Finn. We like to also call him Finnbar, Finnie, Finnie Winnie - you get the idea I am sure.

Anyway, Finn is the most handsome dog you have ever seen and that's the complete truth! He knows it and we know it!

However, you are not going to see handsome Finnie in this entry - you are going to see Twisted Finnie. I could have shown you Freaky Finnie, Lazy Finnie, Sleeping Finnie, Pretty Finnie, Smiling Finnie or Swimming Finnie - but no, you got Twisted Finnie today!

PS: If you want to see how divinely gorgeous Finn really is - you can go and have a look at him here at my other blog you will need to scroll down a little though.

and of course - you must go over to I Heart Faces and check out all the pet images - they are gorgeous! Don't forget to leave comments for everyone - we love it xx

I Heart Faces - Photo Challenge {Wind}

It is school holidays here at the moment and such a divine Autumn day, so I took advantage of my youngest offspring and we did a mini-shoot down at our local beach especially for this challenge.

I used my Canon 50D along with my Lensbaby Control Freak. (Well really it is the 3G but almost the same as the Freak!) I do love that lens system and have been using it more and more in my photography. I was happy with so many of the shots I took but most did not have her face clearly showing. Here is one that did. I just love the movement in the scarf.

Please pop on over and check out all the windy shots over at i heart faces!

I Heart Faces - Photo Challenge {Shadows}

The theme this week is Shadows. I love shadows and I have a whole stack of images that have shadows but not the good type!

I really love this image of my friend's daughter jumping on the tramp in their back yard - the shadow speaks to me and, in isolation, looks like a gorgeous, twirling ballerina. I focused on the shadow and I think this helps show her movement to the left of the frame. What do you think?

Want more shadow magic? Head on over to i heart faces and check them out! Don't forget to leave some blog love for the entries - everyone loves some comments!

I Heart Faces - 2011 Photo Contest {A Slice of Life}

"A Slice of Life" is the subject for this weeks i heart faces challenge. In other words, an image that has more of a photo journalistic approach. A candid capture.

The image that I would like to share with you all shows a very typical part of our family life. My husband and my 15 year old son always working together, trying to fix something that they have found. It is all very serious business to these two - this fixing of things. It is generally something that my other son, my daughter and I try to stay well clear of.
I love this image as it shows their intensity and how well they work together. It is typical of their relationship and something that I hope continues to evolve.

Don't forget to head on over to i heart faces and check out some wonderful images. Let people know you have visited their blog by leaving a message too xx

35/365 - Deluge

35/365/2011

(Canon 50D, Canon 85mm f/1.8 Lens)

Decided to go for a drive around dinner time and thought I would head to Elwood Beach which is probably about 10 mins away in the hope of catching a sunset or something. I caught something and got caught in massive, torrential rain. The rain was soooo hard and visibility was almost zero. I, along with many other drivers, had to pull over to the side of the road and tried to wait it out. It lessened so I drove off the main Beach Road and onto Point Ormond Drive where I too the two purple-toned images through my car window. Long story short - I left home at around 6pm and did not arrive home until after 10.30pm! The flooding was horrendous. Traffic congestion was amazing. But I did manage to take loads and loads of photos! (always an upside!)

34/365 - Waiting for the bus....

34/365/2011

(Apple iPhone, Hipstamatic Application)

 A whole new world, not only High School but Public Transport travel! Here she is waiting for the bus and I think that as I saw her driving away on the bus - I felt more sad than I did seeing my baby off to High School on her first day. It was such a poignant scene. She was nervous and a tad anxious but now she is an old hand! Doesn't take long!

33/365 - First Day of High School

33/365/2011

(Canon 50D, Canon 85mm f/1.8 Lens)
First day of High School and nerves were around.

The photo on the left was as relaxed as I could get her - in fact, I felt very lucky to get a photo at all!

The photo on the right tells you how she felt when she got home! The school is big compared to her primary school, in fact, there are almost as many kids just in Year 7 that were at her old school! And it is all girls - such a big change and gosh she has coped well with the changes. (touch wood!)

32/365 - Fish & Chips at Port Melbourne

32/365/2011

(Canon 50D, Canon 85mm f/1.8 Lens)

An outing to Port Melbourne with just the oldest and the youngest. We spent a pleasant time walking around the docks and had fish & chips by the water. Managed to take this image - you wouldn't think that we were in the middle of the city would you?

A beautiful flower treated to a lovely textural overlay. I was experimenting with textures and am really happy with the outcome.

30/365 Cupcakes, Vintage Scales and old Straw

30/365/2011

(Canon 50D, Canon 85mm 1.8 Lens)

I love colour and I love vintage. Here you can see my favourite vintage kitchen scales that I picked up at a Trash and Treasure market for oh, about a dollar! I adore them to tell you the truth and collect kitchen scales (sort of!).

These cupcakes I made myself bought from my local supermarket and I also bought the old red/white wax paper straws from eBay. Love them. My kids were surprised that you could actually drink liquid through paper!

29/365 - Mikki Love

27/365 - Dinner....

27/365/2011

(Canon 50D, 50mm 1.8 Lens)

I am also doing another photography challenge this year.

52 Weeks of Lifestyle Photography.

I am struggling a little with this style of photography as it is a genre that I am not used to. I took this one tonight of Samuel and Bronte preparing the vegetables both as part of the 365 and the 52.

I may, or may not, submit it as part of the Lifestyle Challenge! I will see how I go. (if I can get anything better more suitable.)

26/365 - Happy Australia Day!

26/365/2011

These two storyboards make up my one photo of the day.
January 26, 2011 was Australia Day.

Australia Day means many different things to many people. It can also mean nothing to some and yet others - well it is a Public Holiday.

I am kind of on the fence and whatever your politics - it can mean Family Day. That is how I like to think of it.

Our two eldest sons had invitations out to other celebrations, so Stan and I took Bronte into the city to Kings Domain Gardens where there was lots of activity. She enjoyed the Dog Flyball competition (so did we!). Stan and I really enjoyed the Vintage Car rally - there were hundreds of cars and it was a fabulous photo haven! Bronte did not enjoy this so much.

We all loved the fabulous flyover by the RAAF Roulettes. Just incredible! We liked the many varied and different people we saw in the crowd and particularly enjoyed the Shrine of Remembrance raising of the flag. It was a great day for us and we finished it off with a BBQ at home with our boys.

What did you do?

25/365 - Here's lookin' at ya!

25/365/2011

(iPhone 3GS using Hipstamatic App)

While out walking the other day, I found these discarded 3-D Glasses with the lenses popped out. I so love the shape of these and it made me think back to when I was younger and the cardboard 3-D glasses that we used. These are so much cooler looking to wear don't you think?

It also got me thinking of all the strange places that you could find such glasses. So I did a series of 7 images showing these in different places....just for fun. This is the first in that series....

24/365 - The Enchanted Maze at Arthur's Seat, Victoria

24/365/2011

(Canon 50D, 50mm 1.8 Lens)

Yes, I know! Two more images in this post. I don't know why but I just have to! These are my two favourites from the day.

This first one, well I was in the big, beautiful hedge maze and was quickly abandoned by my 15 year old and my 12 year old. I wasn't taking much notice of the twists and turns as I was taking photos all over the place. I remember asking someone if they had found the 'middle' yet and I hear Bronte's voice saying "haven't you found the middle yet mum?" It came from next to me but not. I looked through the hedge and this is what I saw....I laughed and said 'hold it there while I take a photo!' and this is the result. I love it! It took me a while longer to find her as she ran off giggling in search of her brother!

and this image is another favourite.....of many!

23/365 - Good Vibrations!

23/365/2011

(iPhone 3gs using Hipstamatic App)

I just love a Kombi and this one, well it is the kind that Dreams are made of!

My favourite colours of red and white - I couldn't believe my luck when I saw it in the local car park. I had seen it earlier in the day driving down the road but to see it parked - yippee! I had my iPhone with me so snapped these photos - and it was a double yippee when I saw that they carried two original Malvern Star Dragsters on the back! How totally cool!

I wish I could have hung around to see who the owners were! I wonder what they looked like? Are they relics from the 70's themselves or young hippy-types who love the style and mode of travel?

When I came back passed an hour later, the Kombi was gone...I will never know!

22/365 - "Gullwing" a sweet, hardworking boat...

22/365/2011

(iPhone 3GS , using Hipstamatic App)

and because yesterday's image was so lame, I get to offer up two today!

Went for an early morning walk along the beach and came across some moored boats. Loved the serenity of the morning and I hope that it is portrayed here.

In the first image, was a sweet and I imagine, hard working little boat called Gullwing and I would say proudly owned by one G. Moylan.

The second image shows two seagulls and a cormorant sharing the same space.
